A Great App for Weight Loss – And It’s Free

I highly recommend the iPod Touch 2nd generation for your workouts. With it’s slim profile and integrated Nike Running Sensor it makes a great workout companion.

But did you know there is also a great weight loss workout application available for the iPhone or iPod Touch. The best thing about this App is that it’s free!

The application is called Lose It! and it’s a great way to track your goals, daily calorie intake, amount of exercise, and the foods that you are eating. I found the interface extremely easy to use. The name of the application really says it all.

When you first start the application you enter the profile information about yourself and your goal. Maybe you are looking to lose weight or you just want to maintain your current weight. The program then calculates the total amount of calories you need in a given day.

Oh but it does so much more…

Once you have your goals set you plug in the foods from the nutritional database that you consume in a given day. You can do this quickly after each meal or snack. This is also a great way to see how often you are eating. Are you waiting too long between meals? Better yet the program lets you look at your intake over the period of a week. This is important because we often get too wrapped up in what we eat on a daily basis rather than putting our daily calorie intake into a more clear context of a full week.

You also get the benefit of having an exercise database where you tell the program what exercises you did on a given day and it will subtract the appropriate calories from your overall daily intake so that you can see if you have a caloric deficit.

Ah, now we have the magic formula: Overall Calorie Intake – Daily Exercise = A Calorie Deficit. Sounds like a winning formula for weight loss.

The software has a couple of other key features such as the ability to see your nutrient profile (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, etc.) as well as the ability to add your own custom exercises, foods, and recipes. This makes it a really good training tool.

Go check it out. Did I mention that Lose It! is completely free?
